Overview

Weeds, Spontaneous plants, Invasives, Garden plants gone wild …. We all have to deal with plants we don’t want. Chemical control is now unacceptable to many, but is this realistic?, and how viable are the alternatives? or should we be asking the question the other way round – what kind of ornamental plantings are compatible with what the local flora throws at us?
This is to be a discussion between practitioners with different experiences, working situations, beliefs and viewpoints, aimed at addressing these important issues – issues which are all too often swept under the carpet!
We will particularly welcome audience participation!
Sheila Das is Head of Gardens and Parks for the National Trust, and was a garden manager at RHS Garden Wisley with responsibility for Education, Edibles, Seed and Wellbeing until 2024. She has also worked for English Heritage.
Owen Hayman is Horticulture Innovation Manager at Pictorial Meadows, part of The Green Estate Community Interest Company. This large social enterprise delivers and maintains flower-rich landscapes across the UK,  and are stewards of 80+ hectares of urban green space, and produce biodiverse Pictorial Meadows seed mixes and meadow turf.
