When Phil and Amanda Honey bought Caisson House in 2010 it wasn’t a blank canvas, but an extraordinary landscape reflecting the property’s unique history.
The house, which is Grade II listed, was built in 1815 by the Somerset Coal Canal Company as their head office. From here, they administered a flight of canals and locks that were constructed throughout the Georgian and Victorian period.
“Caisson” was the name of a revolutionary new kind of lock which was built with high hopes, but failed completely! It was replaced by conventional locks and canals – the remains of these structures thread throughout the gardens. The dry canals have created a diverse eco system – each lock and pound is unique.
