He first came to prominence working on the restoration of Belsay Hall in Northumberland, and has written a number of books, including a highly readable biography of Christopher Lloyd. Today he is very involved with the Professional Gardeners Trust, which helps fund training for gardeners. He himself gardens near Monmouth in Wales.
