Joyce Robinson, inventor of the gravel garden?
Garden Chat ArchiveGwendolyn van Paasschen, Chair of the John Brookes Denmans Foundation talks about Mrs Joyce Robinson, the unsung heroine of gravel gardening.
The popularity of gravel gardening has often been attributed to Beth Chatto and Derek Jarman but in the 1960s at Denmans Garden in West Sussex, a farmer called Joyce Robinson was so inspired by at trip to the Greek island of Delos that she came home to rip up the garden and create gravel gardens and dry river beds.
A fascinating insight into the pioneering work of someone who was very influential but has been almost forgotten.
